My Response: The Chronicles of Oz

The assignment is to reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer, let people guess! The challenge is to find the icons that suggest the story, but do not make it so easy.

So what movie did I pick? Can you guess?

FourSymbolMovie

This film is actually one of my favorite films. It holds a special place in my life as it is symbolic as a whole to me. Coming up with a movie was really hard for me because of all the great movies out there. I wanted to do one with meaning. When I thought of meaning this one came to mind as well as a few others. I had already done “The Wizard of Oz” and thought doing it again would be a for sure guess as to what the movie was. This one however, I am hoping it will be a bit harder to guess. Though, once you figure it out you’ll know the meaning behind all the symbols.

To create the symbols I recreated images off the internet to turn them into more symbolic looking images. I also wanted them to look real at the same time. So, as I progressed from the left to the right facing the screen I made them look more real by a more careful choosing of the images. For some I used symbols already in the programming of Photoshop. The star is one already in the Photoshop programming for instance and required no real messing with except the color, sizing, and placement.

This assignment is worth only 2 stars, but worth stars nonetheless. Because it is worth stars I can now say my total star count for the design assignments is up to 11.5/15.

Time to let out your inner Big Brother! Create a propaganda poster for ds106. Use your photo editing software of choice and write a message to inspire your fellow ds106ers. For example, I took a WW2 poster about increasing ammunition production, and turned it into a poster promoting tweeting.

DS106 is all about creating so why not create an inspiring propaganda poster promoting creating. This assignment is one which adds points to my 15 star total goal and is worth 3 stars. This means my total is now to 9.5/15 stars. Not that these stars are really that important right now. The importance is in the poster and the need to inspire so here you go.

Unclesamcreating

I am actually really pleased with how this project turned out. I was more hung up on what to change the propaganda message to than anything. I knew I wanted to do the creativity theme, but had too many ideas in my head like whether or not I should keep the “I WANT YOU” theme this Uncle Sam poster is famous for. Getting rid of the old message was easy. With the help of cloning and the blur too i t all turned out quite well. I can see the places where I could have done better, but I am not going to get hung up on this poster again. I am pleased with it as it is and do not want to risk ruining it by over working on it.

Create a tv/movie poster that captures the essence of the story through the use of minimalist design/iconography.

This second assignment is worth 3.5 stars bringing my total to 6.5/15 stars for the Design assignments.

Poster

Who doesn’t like a good Avengers action? I know I love it, I almost like what I was able to come up with for a simplified, minimal is best poster, except for one thing. As I look at it now I have just realized I had forgotten to place the Marvel sign on the poster proclaiming it to the brand which owns this fantastic group of heroes!

To simplify and minimize the Avengers I knew exactly what to do. Take the symbols of the heroes, the Avengers’ “A”, and finally some fancy explosion in the background just like in the comic books. Oh, and of course the actors who play this Superheroes.

How would you tell your life’s story if you could only use six words?

To answer this I’ve created an image including only 6 words, my 6-word memoir.

This Assignment from the ds106 assignment bank is part of my 15 star requirements. This is my first one to be completed and is worth 3 stars. This puts me at a total of 3/15 stars.

The Sounds I Hear

Posted: February 24, 2013 in Digital Media 1

Daily Sounds

When you click on the “Daily Sounds” link above you are taken to a page where I have uploaded 10 sounds I personally hear pretty much on a daily basis. These sounds are what make my day mine for the most part. The sounds I have recorded are of a phone ringing, a person walking on hardwood floors, someone going up and down stairs, cans, ice cubes, running water, a radio station, my alarm clock, a garage door, a truck starting up and the sound of me typing on my laptop.

These sounds help to describe the things I do everyday. They also help to show my day from the beginning to the end. To start off, my alarm clock gets me up at all the early hours I need to be up. Usually I leave out of my garage door, but haven’t been because of the cold. It is easier to keep the garage warm for the dogs waiting to come back in later in the morning if I keep is such. Once I’m out the door, I head to wherever I have to be, whether school, work or some other place. The truck starting up embodies the different vehicles I ride in to get to the different places I go. The radio station is a commonality in all of the vehicles. There always seems to be a radio on unless all the stations are playing commercial after commercial. Then, the radio gets turned off. I cannot stand commercials because they are simply annoying.

I work at a grocery store and hear a phone ringing everyday I am there. Hearing a phone ring at work is a requirement almost. If I did not hear someone’s phone ringing, whether it be a customer on the sales floor, my department’s phone, or the phone of the other departments nearby I would feel an unease in the missing sound. The ringing of a phone is such a common sound at work.

With half my sounds explained and half my day gone I head home after work. This is where the water comes from. I do not like to go around smelling like my job and if I have the time I will always shower. Not all the time is there the time to do such, but I will shower as often as I can to get the smell of my job off me. Since I live in the basement I am constantly going up and down our stairs. When you go up or down you can see where the carpet has been worn down certain paths where we travel the most. Down stairs I can hear pretty much everything which goes on upstairs. People walking on our hard floors upstairs is the most commonly heard sound along with the constant sound of claws drumming along the floors from the dogs.

After my shower, if I had the time to get one, I usually have myself a snack or lunch depending on the amount of time left before I have to leave the house again. Water is something I drink a ton of. It is probably one of the only things I drink and ice is one of the best things to happen to water. Chewing on ice is a subconscious act for me. There are certain kinds of ice which are really good for biting on and some which are not good at all. Sonic, for instance, has really good ice for biting on and chewing. Ice is just an amazing form of the water I love so much. I may drink a lot of water, but others I live with do not. This is where the cans in the plastic bag sound comes from. They drink lots of canned beverages, such as soda, and because of such, they recycle the cans.

The rest of my day is very much similar to the being in sound til you get to where I am getting ready for bed. I do a lot of my work while in bed on my laptop. When you listen to the sound you can tell I type quite a bit based on the speed of the typing. Typing is so much easier and so much more faster than having to write everything down. Plus, the sound of me typing can also work to describe how I am a digital media major and have to be on a computer to do what I am learning to do. Doing it right before I go to bed keeps you tired but the job gets done and it is for the most part the best time to do it in regards to everyone being in bed at this time. With everyone in bed my day can come to a close once my work is complete and I can wait fro my alarm to go off yet another morning.

These 10 sounds are what I hear during my days and I love them. They are what helps to keep things normal and going.

My lasted submission for tdc from ds106.us.

Assignment:

If you could be any pastry in the world, which would you be?

Write a narrative of how and why you would be the best __________ the world has ever seen.

My response:

If I could be any pastry in the world, I would be the best banana cream puff the world has ever had. So flaky, gooey, full of bananas, topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate and a sprinkle of nuts with a cherry on top; I’d be the banana split of pastries. Layers of flavor and personality so vast. A mix of textures to keep things interesting I’m the perfect match. A guilty pleasure I would love to be, my life would be complete! Sweet and unique I’d be a standout pastry in the pastry shop. Beautiful, delicious, and dangerous, I’d be the world’s best banana cream puff ever to whipped, baked, filled, and topped!
