DS106 Assignment:

Mashup a children’s book based on another cultural artifact. For example, framing Dr. Who as a children’s book in the aesthetic of a Dr. Suess’s work. See example from College Humor here:

My Response: The Chronicles of Oz

Turn ideas into pictures!

Visualize a blog post, TED Talk, Class lecture or even dense text from a book- through drawing. Use the pictures to symbolically represent & concretize abstract concepts, and to make connections between ideas. Try to use words sparingly and only to reinforce your imagery.

Doodle it in your notebook, use your tablet, or scribble it on the back of a napkin. Just be sure to digitize it and then blog about the process, including citing where your inspiration came from.

Here is my final design assignment from the ds106 page. This assignment is worth 5 stars, bringing my total to 16.5/15 stars.

For this assignment I chose Julie Burstein’s video on about the 4 Lessons in Creativity. Like the Uncle Sam propaganda poster I found I was still wrapped up in the message of Creativity. To better know the talk itself take a look and listen after you view what I’ve come up with.

Learning By Design 005

As I was viewing the talk I was drawn into drawing a visualization of the speech because it was what it was about for the most part, embracing creativity. Visualizing something requires just that. To get a visualized lesson on paper you have to be creative in how to draw what it is you want to remember. I find visualizing something makes things easier to remember. In fact, in my Intro. to Psychology class I aced a test section on the eye because I drew the eye in my notes. When I was taking the test I drew it again on the exam. It was the first time the professor had ever seen a student to it on one of his tests, but it sure worked. It was like having a textbook right there with me as I took the test.

As each section of Julie Burstein’s video passed I tried to memorize what it was she was talking about and pinpoint the main ideas. I drew my self an outline as I listened. Once the talk was over I listened to it again, a luxury you do not always have in class, just to make sure I had not missed anything in my rush to jot everything down the first time. Once I had my outline and I had a pretty good understanding of the talk I drew my visualization. I find if you can do the visualization after an outline is made you don’t have to worry about being caught up with pictures and you can make the visualization organized and more effective.

Research Podcasts

Posted: March 10, 2013 in Uncategorized

What is a podcast? When did they start to gain traction? What does it take to create your own podcast?

For this assignment, do a little research into the history of and nuts and bolts of publishing a podcast.

Find three podcasts that you think might be interesting to follow for a while. The simplest way I know how to find podcasts is through iTunes, however you can also find them through Google searching.

Make a reflective blog post introducting the concept of podcasting to your readers. Things to consider: Tell us about the technology. What equipment & software is needed? Any special subscriptions or website memberships required? Give examples of successful podcasts. Why do you think podcasting caught on? Do you think it will continue, or will other technologies replace it? Do you enjoy listening to podcasts already? Can you give examples of careers altered by podcasting?

Point us in the direction of how to make our own podcast. And finally, find three podcasts that are interesting to you, listen to them, and tell us about them.

What’s on the schedule for this blog and why am I doing something involving research into a topic I am completely uninterested in? Well for one, researching podcasts was assigned to the class. Second, though I may not be interested I can still learn something new, which I am always open to for the most part.

As I mentioned this blog post is going to be on the research I’ve done on podcasting. So to start off with, what is a podcast? According to Google when I searched podcast it is:

A multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc.

So it is pretty much the same thing as an mp3 music file. Someone records themselves talking about things their interested in and put it out into cyberspace for the world for free or for charge. It is different for the varying types there are.

The assignment is to reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer, let people guess! The challenge is to find the icons that suggest the story, but do not make it so easy.

So what movie did I pick? Can you guess?

This film is actually one of my favorite films. It holds a special place in my life as it is symbolic as a whole to me. Coming up with a movie was really hard for me because of all the great movies out there. I wanted to do one with meaning. When I thought of meaning this one came to mind as well as a few others. I had already done “The Wizard of Oz” and thought doing it again would be a for sure guess as to what the movie was. This one however, I am hoping it will be a bit harder to guess. Though, once you figure it out you’ll know the meaning behind all the symbols.

To create the symbols I recreated images off the internet to turn them into more symbolic looking images. I also wanted them to look real at the same time. So, as I progressed from the left to the right facing the screen I made them look more real by a more careful choosing of the images. For some I used symbols already in the programming of Photoshop. The star is one already in the Photoshop programming for instance and required no real messing with except the color, sizing, and placement.

This assignment is worth only 2 stars, but worth stars nonetheless. Because it is worth stars I can now say my total star count for the design assignments is up to 11.5/15.

Time to let out your inner Big Brother! Create a propaganda poster for ds106. Use your photo editing software of choice and write a message to inspire your fellow ds106ers. For example, I took a WW2 poster about increasing ammunition production, and turned it into a poster promoting tweeting.

DS106 is all about creating so why not create an inspiring propaganda poster promoting creating. This assignment is one which adds points to my 15 star total goal and is worth 3 stars. This means my total is now to 9.5/15 stars. Not that these stars are really that important right now. The importance is in the poster and the need to inspire so here you go.

I am actually really pleased with how this project turned out. I was more hung up on what to change the propaganda message to than anything. I knew I wanted to do the creativity theme, but had too many ideas in my head like whether or not I should keep the “I WANT YOU” theme this Uncle Sam poster is famous for. Getting rid of the old message was easy. With the help of cloning and the blur too i t all turned out quite well. I can see the places where I could have done better, but I am not going to get hung up on this poster again. I am pleased with it as it is and do not want to risk ruining it by over working on it.

Create a tv/movie poster that captures the essence of the story through the use of minimalist design/iconography.

This second assignment is worth 3.5 stars bringing my total to 6.5/15 stars for the Design assignments.

Who doesn’t like a good Avengers action? I know I love it, I almost like what I was able to come up with for a simplified, minimal is best poster, except for one thing. As I look at it now I have just realized I had forgotten to place the Marvel sign on the poster proclaiming it to the brand which owns this fantastic group of heroes!

To simplify and minimize the Avengers I knew exactly what to do. Take the symbols of the heroes, the Avengers’ “A”, and finally some fancy explosion in the background just like in the comic books. Oh, and of course the actors who play this Superheroes.

How would you tell your life’s story if you could only use six words?

To answer this I’ve created an image including only 6 words, my 6-word memoir.

This Assignment from the ds106 assignment bank is part of my 15 star requirements. This is my first one to be completed and is worth 3 stars. This puts me at a total of 3/15 stars.
