Black History Poster Proposal

Posted: February 3, 2013 in Digital Media 1

Our digital media class is going to be creating posters to inform anyone who wonders through our University’s halls about Kansas’ African American history. It is a good assignment and project to work on. Not a lot of people actually know about then African America history associated with their area. I don’t even know much in this area. Being able to research something as meaningful as the history behind how our society developed through other cultures and communities.

I’ve done some research and have found some African Americans from Kansas history for whom I found to be some very worthy mentionings few know or heard about. These individuals are who make up my list:

1. Aaron Douglas, artist and educator, 1899 – 1979

2. Gwendolyn Brooks, author, 1917 – 1980

3. Elwood “Bingo” DeMoss, professional baseball player, 1889 – 1965

4. Hattie McDaniel, actress, 1895 – 1952

5. Gale Sayers, professional football player, 1943 – present

6. Benjamin “Pap” Singleton, father of African American exodus, 1809 – 1900

7. Nora Douglas Holt, first African American woman to get master’s degree, 1895 – 1974

8. Lynette Woodard, basketball player, 1959 – present

9. Mamie L. Williams, educator, 1894 – 1986

10. Veryl Switzer, professional football player and educator, 1932 – present
